LANGUAGES
English is the official language of Antigua&Barbuda. Dialect is spoken often by locals.

GOVERNMENT
Antigua achieved its independence on November 1, 1981. It is a member of the British Commonwealth under a Parliamentary system with a Prime Minister as its head.

BANKS
Banks open Mon - Thurs 8am to 2pm and Fri to 4pm. 'Bank Of Antigua' and 'ABIB' open on Sat from 8am to noon.
In Jolly Harbour, the Caribbean Union Bank is open from 9am to 1pm. There are ATM machines located at the Epicurean grocery store and in the central plaza of the shopping centre.

PASSPORT & IMMIGRATION
US, Canadian and UK nationals require proof of citizenship, a valid passport, original or certified birth certificate.

VISA REQUIREMENTS

Cruise ship passengers who are 'in transit' and stay less than 24 hours are not required to present a visa.

CURRENCY
The Eastern Caribbean dollar which is fixed to the US dollar - is the official currency. Recent exchange rate was US $1.00 = EC $2.70. US Currency, travelers checks and major credit cards are accepted at most places.

DRIVERS LICENSE
A temporary driving permit is required for a fee of US $20. It is valid for 3 months. You may obtain one from the Transport Board, car rental agencies and police stations.

 

SHOPPING
Most local stores in St. John's - the capital city - are open Monday through Saturday 8am to 5pm. There is plenty of duty-free shopping in the Redcliffe Quay and Heritage Quay areas in town.

INTERNET
They are numerous internet cafes and WIFI hotspots around the island.

TELEPHONES
Most hotels offer USA Direct calling service, or can connect you with a US operator for calling home. Pay phones are located around the island. Cell phones are available at certain retail establishments.
